Perhaps we'll receive some sort of an explanation in Akira's character story mode this summer though I'm not sure how much I'd be willing to bet on that.As seen in the promotional comic, Sodom and Poison were initially planned to be in Streetwise but were excised. That way we could still get the original outfit as a nostalgia costume too. While Akira's design is one of my favorites in all of Capcom fighting games, I was kinda hoping to see the passage of time hit her and the Rival Schools cast. That applies even doubly more so after Rose's character story seems to set the stage for Street Fighter's future plot with time travel. If that's truly the case, it's weird that Capcom would age-up Akira and Daigo, especially now that they're seemingly trying to focus on a singular narrative going forward. Street Fighter 5 Director Takayuki Nakayama was directly asked by a fan whether both of Capcom's fighting games are part of the same canon universe to which he simply said yes and pointed to Ibuki and Hinata wearing the same school uniforms as another connection between the two. The obvious thing to point to would be to say that clearly Street Fighter and the events of Rival Schools are not actually canon to each other except that doesn't appear to be the case.

Project Justice does show that Daigo was apparently held back and had to become a fourth year student - probably due to his absences from going out to train in the wilderness for months on end - but I don't think there's any school out there that would take him back after flunking at least two more years.Īkira herself doesn't looked to have really changed at all either despite the fact that she too should be out of high school by now.Ĭapcom didn't go out of their way to change everyone's default costumes in SF5, but the ones who did received a nice visual update to showcase the passage of time.Ĭody is probably the best example of this going from a prisoner to the mayor of Metro City though we can also see change in fighters like Birdie, Dhalsim, Karin, Ken, M. I'm not sure if it's ever specifically mentioned in Rival Schools, but Sakura was likely a first year / freshman in that game because her childhood friend Hinata was as well.ĭaigo, meanwhile, was a third year / senior, so how is it exactly that Sakura is attending university at the same time her upperclassman is still beating up kids around school? It's not outright stated in her character story that she's no longer in high school though it's heavily implied, and Rashid seems to confirm the fact in one of his victory quotes against the Alpha alumnus by calling her a university student. Sakura, who appeared as a playable character in Rival Schools, received a welcome redesign for Street Fighter 5 that brought her out of her school attire.

When Daigo is summoned to the field for one of Akira's V-Trigger activations, we can clearly see that he's still wearing the Gedo High School uniform, which doesn't really make any sense when we look at one of the other characters who helps tie the series together. Normally, that wouldn't really be much of an issue considering fighting game characters do that all of the time - I mean Ryu's been wearing that gi for over 30 years at this point - but this occasion is a bit different. Both characters appear in essentially their exact same costumes from Rival Schools and Project Justice you see.
